Athletic Therapy
MY
GOAL – To help restore pain free function from a personalized and thorough assessment and form an individualized treatment program. I will strive to accomplish this by putting together an appropriate treatment plan – including a combination of hands on passive treatment and prescribed exercise.
A Certified Athletic Therapist, CAT(C) provides services that include prevention, and immediate care through assessments, active rehabilitation for injuries and surgery. We work with the musculoskeletal system, using the “sports medicine model” to rehabilitate all injuries. We focus on the patient using an active approach consisting of a combination of manual techniques and prescribed exercises.
Athletic Therapy is for the active individual not just the athlete.
A CAT(C) must have fulfilled the academic and practical requirements before attempting certification. Certified members have successfully completed a comprehensive written theory exam and a subsequent oral/practical exam developed and administered by the certification board of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA). We must present annual documentation demonstrating continued professional development to maintain
their status with the CATA.
Scope of Practice:
- Assessment, prevention and immediate care and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries
- Assessment: history,
observations, functional testing, treatment and prescribed exercises
- Prevention: musculoskeletal and postural evaluation, equipment selection, fitting and repair, warm-up, conditioning programs, prophylactic or supportive taping and adapting to the
activity environment and facilities
- On-field immediate care:
injury assessment, basic emergency life support, recognition and management of acute traumatic neurological dysfunction, provision of first aid, preparation for entrance into appropriate health care delivery systems, or where appropriate, utilization of techniques facilitating a safe return to participation
What to expect from your Athletic Therapist:
- Assessment of your injuries and conditions with a thorough history of physical examination
- Look for cause of injury and not just treat the symptoms
- Provide an active and aggressive rehab program for all stages of healing
- May use rehabilitation techniques including:
manual therapy, joint and soft tissue mobilizations, soft tissue release, myofascial techniques, therapeutic modalities (Ultrasound, IFC, TENS, NMES, hydrotherapy) - May use supportive taping techniques for optimal healing or functional taping for pain relief,
relaxation and support
Who
Should See an Athletic Therapist?
- Anyone who has sustained a musculoskeletal or neuromuscular injury whether it is from sport, activities of daily living, or occupational stresses
- If your body “does not move the way it used to” and you want help in mobility to reduce stiffness and discomfort you may be feeling or prevent a future injury
- If you need postural corrections
- Anyone that wants their treatment to be “hands-on” and active
Athletic Therapy is recognized by some insurance companies, but you must check your individual plan to see if you are covered. Some insurance companies will put an and/or policy on their rider, which means you can be covered for physiotherapy and/or Athletic Therapy, but you must contact your insurance company in order to confirm or arrange this.
